Introduction

This was the second winter of operation for the Jericho Warming Hut and the number of visitors continues to grow.  From the comments in the Guest Book, many visitors came in several times over the winter and they consider the Warming Hut like their second home.

The Warming Hut winter season started on December 15, 2012 and closed on March 31, 2013 for mud season.  During the time the hut is open, visitors are encouraged to sign in to a log book inside the hut.   The information from the log book is used to produce the graphs in this report which analyze where visitors are coming from and the peak visiting times.  This report is sent to the NH Bureau of Trails and the City of Berlin so they can be used for future planning.

This page from the Warming Hut log book shows visitors signing in
from 7 different states including Alaska.

Visitors by State and Country

The Warming Hut hosted visitors from 23 states and 7 different countries.  Counts are from the guest book only.  Actual visitors could be 2-3 times higher because not everyone signs in.  Out of the 1,541 visitors, only 331 (21%) were from the bordering towns of Berlin, Gorham and Milan.

Visitors by Week

The snowmobile season started on December 15, 2012 but there was not enough snow to start grooming operations until December 19, 2012.  Grooming operations stopped on March 26th and the park closed on March 31, 2013.  During this time almost all visitors came to the warming hut by snowmobile, but there were a few ATV riders at the end of the season.

Summary

The statistics gathered at the Jericho Warming Hut continue to provide a valuable insight into where visitors are originating their trips to the Berlin area and peak visiting times.   We hope these statistics will be helpful for anyone planning enhancements to Jericho Mt. State Park or the infrastructure in the area.

The White Mt. Ridge Runners club plans to produce these reports at the end of each season as follows:

Snowmobile Season: December 15th until the park closes for mud season (Usually in April)

ATV Season: Park opening day (usually in May) until the start of snowmobile season on December 15th

The original sign-in sheets and spreadsheet data is available to anyone who is interested in taking a closer look at this information.  We also welcome any suggestions for additional reports or improvements to the current reports.

Improvements

The Warming Hut has held up well with no sign of vandalism or damage.  However the floor was wet during times of heavy usage (due to melted snow from boots) and the club was concerned this could lead to water damage to the sub-floor and get into the insulation under the floor.

In the spring just before the summer opening, a tile floor was installed in over the wood subfloor.  This tile will keep any water from snow tracked into the Warming Hut from getting into the subfloor.  It will also be easier to keep clean.  In addition a new sign was installed to invite people go into the Warming Hut and sign in.

A new tile floor was installed in mid-May just before the start of the ATV season.  The tile in the wood box and around the stove was installed
when the hut was first built and it has held up well.

A new sign was built and installed on the southwest corner of the Warming Hut facing the pavilion.  Some visitors thought it was
a privately owned cabin and so they did not come in.  Hopefully this will increase the number of visitors who sign the guest book.
