Introduction

The Jericho Warming Hut completed its first full year of operation on December 14, 2012.  It has quickly become a favorite destination for new and returning visitors to Jericho Mountain State Park.  So far, there has been no damage to the warming hut and regular visitors are making it a point to clean up the hut during their visit.

To help new visitors find the Warming Hut, signs were put up at several intersections within a 3-4 mile radius of the hut and that has increased the visitor count.

To get the data obtained in this report, over 80 pages of signatures were analyzed and three pieces of critical data were entered into a spreadsheet:  Date of Visit, Visitor’s Zip Code and Number of Visitors.  This date was then translated into charts and transferred into this document.  This effort took over 3 days of time, but it provides a comprehensive visitor profile that would be difficult to get from any other source.

The data in this report covers the 2012 summer ATV season which ran from mid-May to mid-December.   Just like the winter season, comments about the Warming Hut and Jericho ATV trails were almost 100% positive as can be seen in this sample take from the Guest Book:

The Guest Book contained 1,472 individual entries that represented a total of 2,163 visitors from 21 different states and 8 different countries.  We know that not everyone who visits the Warming Hut takes the time to sign in and we also know that not everyone who visits the park goes up to the Warming Hut.  So the actual number of visitors to Jericho Park is probably 4 to 5 times higher than what we reported here or somewhere in the range of 10,000 visitors for the summer season.  Based on the positive comments and the number of repeat visitors, this number is sure to grow in the future which will make Jericho Park one of the biggest summer attractions in the North Country.

Visitors by State and Country

The Warming Hut hosted visitors from 21 states and 8 different countries.  Out of the 2,163 visitors, 639 (30%) were from the bordering towns of Berlin (441 visitors), Gorham (87 visitors) and Milan (111 visitors).

Visitors by Week

ATV season started about a week earlier than normal due to dry spring conditions.  Attendance at the park appeared to be steady throughout the season from opening day until the week after Columbus Day with spikes in attendance during holiday weekends and during special events.

Visitors by Week – continued

This chart graphically illustrates how steady the traffic in the park was during the 2012 summer season.  From mid-May through mid-October, visitor traffic to the Warming Hut averaged between 60-80 visitors per week with spikes during holiday weekends or during special events.  Abnormally warm weather during the second week of October led to the last spike of visitors.

Visitors by Distance

Just under half the visitors (1,087or 95%) who signed in traveled between 100 and 300 miles to get to Berlin.   The bulk of these visitors originated their trip in central and southern NH and Massachusetts.  About one third of the visitors were local residents who traveled 25 miles or less to reach the Park.

Summary

The statistics gathered at the Jericho Warming Hut during its first season of operation are impressive.  For the combined winter and summer season, there were a total of 2,865 visitors from 24 states and 11 different countries.  Through our past observations, we believe this represents about 20-25% of the actual visitors who come to the park.   Therefore we believe that the total visitors to the Park last year numbered between 10 and 15 thousand.

Just about every comment in the Guest Book contains adjectives like “awesome”, “great”, “fabulous”, “wonderful”, etc.  Remarks like “Great Trails” and “Beautiful Views” and “Love the Cabin” are common.  There were also multiple entries from repeat visitors, with one group stating it was their 5th trip this year to the Park.

So clearly Jericho Mountain State Park is doing a lot of things right and quickly becoming a favorite destination for winter and summer travelers.

Given the fact that over half of the visitors are traveling between 100 and 300 miles to get to the Park, there is certainly a need for overnight accommodations for this group of travelers.  A hotel in Berlin and/or expanded camping facilities would probably be most welcomed and utilized by this group.

The original Guest Book sign-in sheets and spreadsheet data are available to anyone who is interested in taking a closer look at this information.  We also welcome any suggestions for additional reports or improvements to the current reports.
