The 2013 Great North Woods Vintage Race Series sponsored by LaPerele's IGA Plus kicked off with its annual title donation last week, and the sixth season of racing will open next Saturday, January 12 in Pittsburg.
This will be the first race of the four-event series, which will continue with races in Colebrook on February 2, in Errol on February 23, and at a site to be determined based on snow conditions on March 16.
The Pittsburg Ridge Runners race crew has been working in the off-season to grade the track and improve conditions for the upcoming race season. With nearly a foot of natural snow and the efforts of the grooming team, the track will be in great shape for the opening race on January 12.
Over 125 racers are expected, attracted to vintage snowmobile racing's lower speeds. Sleds must be mostly stock, with the exception of two classes, thus cutting the costs significantly for participants. There are 15 classes based upon the engine size for sleds manufactured in 1974 (except for the Mod class, which goes to 1978) and older that are fan-cooled or free-air, single or twin cylinder.
All the racetracks offer excellent spectator access, either by automobile or snowmobile, and utilize the natural terrain of the land. All classes include qualifying heats, last-chance qualifiers as necessary, and feature races. The races start at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
Hot food and drinks, refreshments and rest rooms are also available at all the sites. The Pittsburg race site is on Farr Road, off of Back Lake Road, and the entry fee is $5 per person.
