Snow Drifters to revive Grand Prix on its 50th Anniversary

LANCASTER — The Lancaster Snow Drifters have planned an exciting weekend of activities for area residents and out-of-towners on Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. “We are excited to have the help and racing crew from Bonneville, N.Y. in staging Race Weekend,” reads the Club’s news in “Sno-Traveler.”

The Northern New York Vintage Snowsled Racers (NNYVSR) Race Series is coming to town on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the 3/8-mile Oval Ice Track on the east side of Route 3 on Lancaster Fairgrounds property and racing starts at 9 a.m.

The Lancaster Grand Prix Race will take place on Sunday, Feb. 2 — Ground Hog Day — and is also being run by the NNYVSR.

There will be cash prizes, and class winners will be added to the famous Kilkenney Cup, now celebrating its 50th anniversary in Snowmobile City, USA — the Birthplace of American Snowmobile Racing!

The Race Weekend will kick off with a Buffet Dinner-Dance Celebration and Ball on Friday night,Jan. 31, at the Mountain View Grand in Whitefield.

The cocktail hour is at 5:30 p.m., followed by a sumptuous buffet, plus music and dancing until 11 p.m. Tickets for the Ball are available online as a stand-alone ticket or as part of a whole weekend ticket.

Grand Prix track starts to take shape

Shane, Tyler, and Spencer Beattiie started moving snow into place to form the 1/4 mile ice oval in mid-December.
